Austin's Yellow Bike Project ~ 1216 Webberville Rd ~ 78721

The Austin Yellow Bike Project 501c(3) is a volunteer-powered initiative to put bicycles on the streets of Austin and Central Texas by operating community bike shops, teaching bike mechanics and maintenance, and acting as a local bike advocacy group. golden bike project YBP is located at 1216 Webberville Road in Austin, Texas, and is an educational facility open to anyone who wants to learn about fixing and riding bikes. At YBP, we don’t fix your bike for you—we show you how to fix it yourself. The Webberville Shop (view schedule) has twelve fully equipped work-stands and a large selection of used parts, frames, and bikes in various stages of repair. We also offer ready-to-ride used bikes at affordable prices. Use of the shop is free to the public, but we ask that you volunteer time back equal to what you use for personal projects to help keep this community resource alive. If you don’t have time to volunteer, donations are also appreciated. From our founding in 1997 until autumn of 2013, YBP was a 100% all-volunteer organization. While we now employ a small staff, we are still fully supported by volunteer time and donated bikes and parts—volunteers continue to coordinate our Open and Volunteer Shops, and to govern and manage YBP through consensus as members of the Collective Council. For more information check out our Community Bike Shop, Get Involved, and Q and A pages. YBP has many active and past projects aimed at getting people on bikes. Special projects are targeted towards children and those without the means of purchasing bikes. View our Special Projects and Kids’ Programs pages for more details. Take a look around the site to learn more, and come visit us at the shop! Love, YBP View Bylaws (updated 2010-04-06 | Previously called Words of the Yellow Bike Project)

The Triumphant Return of Lady Bike!

It's been a while since we had one, but this January we'll see the return of Lady Bike! Lady Bike is a special shop for women, by women. Fixing bicycles and mechanics in general are often seen as male-dominated pursuits. Lady Bike exists to create an atmosphere free from such stereotypes and paradigms, and anyone who identifies as female is welcome. It’s been a long time since we’ve scheduled a Lady Bike shop. However, we strive to create a safe and welcoming space at all of our shops for everyone, regardless of gender and background, and there are female coordinators on hand at many of our Open and Volunteer Shops. Want to help make Lady Bike happen more often? Apprentice to become a coordinator!

We're Overrun With Bikes & They're 10% Off

Our mechanics have been hard at work cranking out bikes and there are a ton ready for you to come by and take home. We have everything from commuters to road bikes to mountain bike and more. Come by and take a look any time we're open. If you didn't know, we also have regular daytime hours from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Tuesday through Saturday.

Tire & Tube Recycling @ YBP

We mentioned last month that Yellow Bike would being taking over where Jack & Adams left off. This month, we'd like to announce to all local bike shops that we are housing a trailer for Bicycle Recycle to gather all your old tires and tubes for reuse.

HANDCRAFTED BEERS BREWED FRESH IN SOUTH AUSTIN Starting a brewery, the idea sounded crazy to their family and friends back in 2001, but Amy and Rob Cartwright knew what they were up against. They knew the “big guys” brew millions of barrels a year, on automated equipment worth millions of dollars, with Super-sized advertising budgets. But Amy and Rob Cartwright had to brew beer, their own beer. And they had to share it withTexas. Years of research, planning, and fundraising culminated in October 2004 when Independence Brewing Co. opened its warehouse doors. Hand bottling, handcrafting tap handles and handcrafted beer ensued. Along with many sleepless nights a healthy dose of “What the hell are we doing?” But passion persevered, and little by little it began to come together. We have some new faces and have said some goodbyes, but the passion for beer has never waivered. And that is passion we instill in every bottle as it comes off the bottling line, into the box, onto the truck, into your local grocery store and in to your homes. We labor to produce our hand-crafted gift for Texas. We hope you enjoy it, Cheers!

Our Favorite Brewery and very first FrankenBike Sponsor, Independence Brewing Company, will be onsite with adult beverage for those of us 21 years and older so bring your ID if you'd like a cold one or two.  ;)

There is no science to our food. We just make the best delivery pizza using only pure, whole ingredients. Throw these together for a simple cheese pie or combine any number of toppings to create your own version of a truly great pizza. Established in 1999, Austin's Pizza has 12 Austin area locations: Westlake, South Austin, UT area, Downtown, Central Austin, North Austin, Cedar Park, Pflugerville, and Round Rock. Fresh-made sauces, no preservatives and 29 different toppings and cheeses are just some of the reasons Austin's Pizza is known and loved by Austinites.

Austin's Favorite Pizza Company and also one of FrankenBikes very first sponsors, Austin's Pizza, will be onsite with inexpensive, Fresh Slices and Pizza Rolls so if you're hungry make sure to save a couple bucks for some awesome grub!

That's it for now.  Until then please Stay Safe, Work Hard and Go Ride Your Bike!  See you on December 27, 2014. ;)

FrankenBike # 112 ~ November 29, 2014 ~ 10am-4pm

Bikealot LLC is an Austin area independent mechanic owned and operated full service South Austin neighborhood bicycle shop. Bikealot LLC was formed in March of 2012 as an extension of Bikealot’s Bicycle Service, which has operated in Austin, TX by Brad Wimberly, since 2003. The name Bikealot came about during the time I worked as a bicycle courier in downtown Houston, TX. It was the only time in my life when I was not wrenching on bicycles full time. I had begun obsessing over bicycles around 1994 when I frequented Houston’s fabulous skate parks, half pipes and jumps throughout the city. I also begin my bike shop career then. After years of dedication to the soon to bloom 20”/BMX jump scene, I then discovered mountain biking while living in Missouri and was immediately hooked by its balance of solitude, nature, speed and form. The name “Bradbikealot” was given to me by a good friend and fellow Houston bicycle courier in the year 2000 when he learned that I had acquired three separate bicycle delivery jobs, commuted round trip each day, and would still occasionally hit the few trails we had after work. The nickname stuck with the other bike couriers and was often shortened to “Bikealot”. Sometime in 2003 after deciding that Austin was home, I began using the name “Bikealot’s Bicycle Service” to account for the bicycle related business I was doing in Austin. This business consisted of restoring vintage bikes with more modern parts, building wheels, bikes, gluing tubular tires on and all kinds of service contract work for bicycle shops, amateur and professional cyclists, non-profits, road racing teams and any individual that needed my help with service or getting the right bicycle part or gear. “Bikealot’s Bicycle Service” had its grass roots start here in Austin working from home, coffee shops, other’s homes, racing sites and anywhere I could work to improve anyone’s ride. The plan has always been to build the business into an Austin specific bicycle shop that emphasizes quality service and offers as much to the Austin bicycle scene as possible. I have never been happier with state of “Bikealot” and will continue to offer as much as possible to the Austin’s bicycling community. We are always dedicated to supporting cyclist of all types in and around Austin who decide to ride. We provide bicycle service and sell all types of quality parts and accessories for you or your bike. We strive to select the best gear from companies we are proud to work with. At Bikealot you will find a thoughtful selection of city bikes, racks, bags, helmets, lights, gloves, fresh roasted coffee beans, bike specific clothing, locks and bicycle parts selected with both value and quality in mind. We have access to thousands of bicycle specific products and can often get what you need or want the very next day if it is not already on the shelf. Bikealot is equipped with 20+ years of wrenching experience, the tools, knowledge and resources to meet your service needs or help you find the right parts to complete your own project. We guarantee our work and are confident that you will appreciate our commitment to quality.
